1931                                     1994

Colour
The 1931 poster is much more colourful as it uses colours like red, blue and yellow. These colours connote quite opposite things to each other as red connotes danger, yellow – comfort and blue – calmness. Whereas the 1994 poster has a much simpler colour scheme as it only uses the colours white, black and purple.
Background
The background of the 1931 poster is filled with vivid colours including shades of purple/blue and red whereas the 1994 one is completely black, which causes the title to stand out.
Key image
The key image in the first poster is the monster’s face. Also there is a picture of the doctor and a women laying down on the bed which gives the audience an insight into the story line. In the second poster there is no actual image as the title takes up that role as it I placed right in the centre. Out of the title there is lightening coming out which relates to what will happen in the movie.
Colour used – text font and image
The font in the first picture is sans-serif which causes the poster to look manlier. Also all the writing is very bold. The title has a gradient that goes from red to yellow. The more recent poster has a serif font which makes the title seem softer.
Tagline
“The Original Horror Show” - this is the tagline for the 1931 poster and it conveys the genre of the movie. Also it notices itself as one of the first horror shows. However, I don’t think that this tagline sells the film to the audience
“Be Warned” – This tagline is used in the 1994 poster and I believe it is more effective than the older poster. It causes the audience to feel tense as they were warned.
Layout
The layout of the recent poster is much simpler and it is easy to see the title and all the important information, whereas the 1931 poster may confuse the audience due to a lot going on; colours and images.
Target audience
The target audience for the 1931 film was females and males of every age as the age certificate was PG, however the age certificate for the 1994 film was a 15. This shows that the later version of the film was made to be more of a horror genre therefore the BBFC had to raise the age certificate.
Reaction – how have you reacted? How would other viewers react to it? Is this what the institution wanted?
I believe that the newer movie is taken more seriously as the poster is made to be less colourful and its overall conventions adhere more to the horror genre. I think that this is what the institution wanted as it puts the film into a different light which may attract a wider range of audiences.
