Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols. These symbols and signs are used in film trailers to help the audience decode the meaning of the trailer and help their understanding. The signs are encoded by the creator of a film, to make it easy for the viewer to understand what is happening within the film.

Saussure (1983) - He believed there are 3 levels on which an audience reads a media text

Syntactic level - This the denotation (signifier/literal thing) that the audience identifies within the frame.
Representational level - This conveys how the characters or places are represented.
Symbolic level - This is the connotation (signified) where the viewer associates the signifier.

Barthes - He believed that an audience's understanding of media language, comes from their previous knowledge of popular myths or superficial stories.Semiotics is relevant to media language as it allows audiences to understand different signs and symbols and associate them with their knowledge of other media texts. For example, conventions are a common way to use semiotics.
